yep, it's almost certainly a stress crack, and quite possibly caused by differential expansion of the car frame due to our sun-pal. [There's a thread relating to Caustic's rear screen 'bombed'; the latter is probably knobhead-caused (quite possibly with a fragment of fractured spark-plug ceramic) but there's a relationship here: Fracture mechanics. (See:
https://www.fracturemechanics.org/griffith.html )]

or if you fancy a chuckle, try googlying
'Giffith crack equation' and see what comes-up first. Appropriate, lol.
Not that your screen is a laughing matter: The centre sensor unit, being glued onto the screen, has apparently worked both as a local reinforcement/stiffener, but also a stress concentrator, for the glass.

If you fancy, having made some assumptions about the glass properties and estimated it's dimensions, you could calculate the maximum size surface flaw (fracture) that would not cause brittle (sudden) crack progression, but it's quite small. Very small. So it's a good idea to frequently check the screen and rapidly get any crack 'repaired' (i believe acrylic material is used to 'glue' the crack edges together and so prevent propagation).

I notice your car is dark grey: dark colours will obs exacerbate differential expansion, especially if the car goes from a relatively cool/cold environment to 1kW/m2 full-bore sunshine. But it seems to have happened to a few people, so i'm guessing there may be an issue with either the screen bead (too stiff/incorrectly fitted) or body stiffness - probably (hopefully) the former. Do Honda keep a database of this non-dealer failure-correction stuff?
good luck.

p.s. screen emergency repair kits cost about a tenner; think i'll get one when my e arrives.

My turn this time. Yesterday, nothing. Today a 40cm crack right from bottom edge into the middle of screen. Windscreen cover enable, 3 weeks to wait for replacement.

Meh.

I had super small crack on my A3 passenger side top corner. It took this crack about 2 years to get to the middle of windshield. As it wasn't on drivers side I got away with it in tech checks. Changed windshield just before selling it. Wasn't too much as it was from China. It's probably not so easy with Honda.

Windscreen finally replaced today by Autoglass. Chunk of missing paintwork on bonnet edge by wipers, definitely wasn't there when I dropped it off, they claim it couldn't have been them during their work. All very frustrating.

The wipers were lifted without putting them in the maintenance mode. Classic mistake, the issue is present on all cars at my dealer's.

Sad to hear that after all the trouble with the glass replacement you ended up with a chipped bonnet :(

And that's what I told them they'd done. They said they'd lifted the bonnet, removed the arms that way to get at the valance panel etc. I couldn't prove they done it, even though there were still paint chips present. Meh.

if you have a replacement order from a Honda dealer, please send a photo of it. It may have a spare part number(OEM) for the windshield

My turn - small chip that happened about a week ago spread over the passenger side before I got to it :(

Hoping that I get genuine parts and a heated screen from my insurer.

Will try to get some part numbers.

I was unfortunate and got a rock lifted by a passing vehicle cracking my heated windshield.

Luckily, it was covered by the insurance company since the total replacement cost with an original windshield was about 1200 euros. It took them more than two weeks to order it and about 4 hours to replace. I took a video by the company building of my bonnet being not chipped, left the wipers in the maintenance mode and warned the company about it. So they didn't chip my paint. They have only managed to drain the 12v battery or do something else to the car to make it show 0% charge when being 70% charged (I didn't witnessed it myself but received a rather confusing call from the service man). Anyway, after several attempts they have managed to start the car and roll it out. I had no similar issues with the car after picking it up.

Apparently, after changing the windshield cameras that are under it (I am assuming the lane assist and sigh recognition cameras?) have to be re-calibrated. The company which carried on the replacement didn't manage to re-calibrate the cameras. They made me sign a paper that I am aware of it and won't rely on the related features (there was something about collision detection in it, probably, a general form or they are not aware that the E is not using a camera for that). Then they told me to go to a Honda dealership to get it re-calibrated. I didn't notice any strange behavior of the mentioned features, therefore, I will do it with the winter tier replacement. To avoid the extra fuss with the re-calibration I would recommend to replace the windshield at a dealership.

First time poster but a quick thank you as I "lurked" for some time before buying my E, a decision fuelled by this forum so thank you.

Loving the car, owned it for nearly 4 months now. It has developed the annoying rattle some others have commented on, which is disappointing but even more curious is the horrific crack now adorning the windscreen.

I parked the car in my drive, disappeared indoors for the rest of the day, came out and *bam* there it was. It appears to have started at the very top where it meets the roof, just left of centre, tracked round in an arc, almost perfectly around the cameras and sensors, before continuing down and around in the centre of the windscreen. Never seen anything like it.

I can't rule out nefarious actions by third parties but seeing as the car is parked literally outside my living room window where I was for most of the time, and I live in a quiet cul-de-sac, it seems unlikely. And there are no suspect stone chips or similar which could have weakened it.

Curious indeed. I just thought I'd throw this out there in case anyone else has experienced this in which case Honda needs to be made aware of it. I'm no engineer but it certainly seems like a stress fracture.

Your thoughts appreciated. I've attempted to show with a photo but difficult to make it out in all its glory.

Thanks again for this great forum. I have to say, I've never had so much attention driving a car - on almost every journey I get admiring looks, smiling faces and without fail a Q&A on the car by perfect strangers. Amazing!

All the best.

Richard
Hi Richard,

a week ago, the same thing happened to my Honda e. The only difference is that the car was parked in the garage and the crack formed while driving.
But it looks terribly like yours. look at the photo.
I will say there is a slit at the top and not a crack.

So how did your story end, honda warranty coverage or insurance coverage?

Best regards from Germany
