Out of curiosity, what were you looking for in a used example that you couldn't find?
I looked at 3 used ones that were local to me. Having 3 kids I no longer have time to spend half a day traveling to see a car.
One was an approved 20 plate in blue. Left side driver door handle wouldn’t work, inside or out. Car had a number or parking dents and 16” black wheels with each one having kerb damage to some extent. Paint missing on lip of bonnet with wipers lifted.
Next up was a grey one at a car supermarket. Prominent stone chips littered the front including the black plastic. There was a sizable dent in the passenger front door. Also some heavy scratching to the boot lip where I guess something heavy had been dragged across it. Paint also missing from bonnet lip edge.
Later was a 20 plate blue at the same supermarket. Door handles weren’t fully retracted as it sat in the car park. Was a large scrape down the left side driver and passenger door. I didn’t bother to look at it in any more detail.
I just wanted a car that had been looked after really. All of the ones I saw were a bit sad and neglected. On a car that seems a little fussy on maintenance none filled me with confidence it had been looked after.
Ah, well having heard that I think I was very lucky with my experience. I too wanted an E that was either very well looked after or barely used, which does seem to be a reasonable expectation given how little a lot of these cars have been driven (many people buying as second cars, combined with a release during the pandemic).
Initially, I went with a grey one, also secured without seeing in person (already had my heart set on the car for a while). That had a few hundred miles on the odometer, but a 2020 model, apparently someone bought a fleet of these and some were left in reserve. Odd story, anyway, I came to understand it probably didn't have the 8 year warranty on the traction battery because of lack of servicing for 3 years, then backed out of that, especially when I heard from a dealer that if I had to replace the battery one day it would cost £20,000 (of which only £500 is labour!).
Shortly afterwards, a blue one came up for sale at an approved dealer and for about the same price. 3000 miles, this looked pristine from the photos I could see. Surprisingly, it also had every possible option added onto it. Weirdly, even the rear seats were fully leather upholstered, which is as it should be in normal car world, except that I know on the standard leather upgrade for the E only the headrests were leather while the seats were still fabric. The blue on the alloy rims had been kerbed a bit but the dealer very kindly had that repaired.
So I pounced on that, again without having seen the car in person. There were some minor cosmetic issues on receiving, mainly that there were some marks and dents on the rear passenger door pillar trim that I hadn't seen in the advertised images/video, which I mentioned earlier, where the 12V must have died in the past and someone had shut the window into the trim. I was willing to accept the car regardless, but the dealer also kindly detailed that out for me, not entirely because it's plastic and they didn't want to paint it, but it's nearly unnoticeable now which is more than good enough. The dealer also replaced the seal on that door without my asking because they noticed it wasn't in the best shape. Otherwise, no parking dents, no paint missing, including on the lip of the bonnet which I checked, and if there was anything in the past it has been repaired well. My dealer is Yeomans, the same one firewire mentioned. I'm very happy with the service they have provided to date, although with this car it's still early days for me!
Oh, since this thread is about prices and I'm at risk of derailing it, I paid around £17,000 - which (provided you can accept that the car won't take you very far or carry a lot
) I think is a great price for this car with or without options, as long as it's been well looked after and the mileage isn't too high. Unlike firewire I'm not too concerned about the trade in price for this car, I plan to keep it for as long as it'll run properly and I don't doubt that it will run a very long time (5-10 years and likely more, subject potentially to problems with obtaining replacement parts at some point but will cross that bridge when I get to it). So I'm looking at the price with a different perspective. Funnily enough, I think the main issue would be if CarPlay stops supporting the car's OS, that might be the only factor that annoys me enough to get rid of it it.
And if the EV market does crater, well, if there is any EV on the market that has a floor price just because of it's wholesome appearance, it has to be this one... or so I hope! I mean, really, short of a supercar (which would probably get keyed in short order), I haven't seen another car that makes me and other people smile like this one does, including younger people. I live next to a busy park, parents are taking their children there for a stroll all the time, and kids seems to be hypnotised by the appearance of this thing. It's really got a friendly robot vibe about it. I've even seen much younger kids in pushchairs turning their heads, even after the point that the pushchair is well past the car
