Out of curiosity, what were you looking for in a used example that you couldn't find?
I looked at 3 used ones that were local to me. Having 3 kids I no longer have time to spend half a day traveling to see a car.

One was an approved 20 plate in blue. Left side driver door handle wouldn’t work, inside or out. Car had a number or parking dents and 16” black wheels with each one having kerb damage to some extent. Paint missing on lip of bonnet with wipers lifted.

Next up was a grey one at a car supermarket. Prominent stone chips littered the front including the black plastic. There was a sizable dent in the passenger front door. Also some heavy scratching to the boot lip where I guess something heavy had been dragged across it. Paint also missing from bonnet lip edge.

Later was a 20 plate blue at the same supermarket. Door handles weren’t fully retracted as it sat in the car park. Was a large scrape down the left side driver and passenger door. I didn’t bother to look at it in any more detail.

I just wanted a car that had been looked after really. All of the ones I saw were a bit sad and neglected. On a car that seems a little fussy on maintenance none filled me with confidence it had been looked after.

I recently bought a 70 plate with 15k miles for £16k. I paid extra for the extended warranty so covered until 2028, along with the battery warranty until 2028. The car has been fantastic in the first two months, it was an ex finance return that the Honda garage bought from auction.

Had a minor issue with the paintwork condition and wheel condition when the car arrived (different to what was stated by the dealer) but eventually got a minor refund to avoid returning the car. Don't trust the 'preparation phase' they claim will solve minor things. Get pictures after before buying. The dealer ended up sending me multiple videos and photos and still some areas was missed so better to be sure.

Really enjoying the car though!

The sales guy told us that we can purchase the extended warranty even if the car was bought from a non Honda dealer or private seller, as long as it is still valid. Another thing he said that there is a Manufacturer Guaranteed warranty which is for upto two years and that one covers everything, even the door handles which we mentioned specifically. The manufacturers guarantee is different from the extended three year warranty (£980) which doesn't cover door handles faults. So we asked him to email this info in writing and now waiting on this.
is it true that cars built in 2020-21 had more faults than the later builds or is this just a lottery depending on if you get a Friday afternoon build or not?

BTW the 10th letter in the VIN is P. So is it a 2021 build? Thanks!
That's interesting. I didn't know the door handles were excluded from the extended warranty, do you know why that is? Seems a bit bizarre. What else is excluded from an extended warranty?

Regarding the 2020-21 question, my opinion is there will be very little difference between the 2020-21 and later year models, except for battery usage and normal wear and tear, since the car was never updated/upgraded formally. Any changes to the car would be software and can be pushed by the dealer if needed. Any manufacturing differences would otherwise be marginal and imperceptible. I suppose the brake servo issue that's reportedly affecting the Jazz and some Es would be less likely to materialise on a newer manufacture that hasn't had the fluid changed, but that's about it.

Not sure about the letter in the VIN, but you can call Honda direct if there's any doubt and they can tell you.

Ah, well having heard that I think I was very lucky with my experience. I too wanted an E that was either very well looked after or barely used, which does seem to be a reasonable expectation given how little a lot of these cars have been driven (many people buying as second cars, combined with a release during the pandemic).

Initially, I went with a grey one, also secured without seeing in person (already had my heart set on the car for a while). That had a few hundred miles on the odometer, but a 2020 model, apparently someone bought a fleet of these and some were left in reserve. Odd story, anyway, I came to understand it probably didn't have the 8 year warranty on the traction battery because of lack of servicing for 3 years, then backed out of that, especially when I heard from a dealer that if I had to replace the battery one day it would cost £20,000 (of which only £500 is labour!).

Shortly afterwards, a blue one came up for sale at an approved dealer and for about the same price. 3000 miles, this looked pristine from the photos I could see. Surprisingly, it also had every possible option added onto it. Weirdly, even the rear seats were fully leather upholstered, which is as it should be in normal car world, except that I know on the standard leather upgrade for the E only the headrests were leather while the seats were still fabric. The blue on the alloy rims had been kerbed a bit but the dealer very kindly had that repaired.

So I pounced on that, again without having seen the car in person. There were some minor cosmetic issues on receiving, mainly that there were some marks and dents on the rear passenger door pillar trim that I hadn't seen in the advertised images/video, which I mentioned earlier, where the 12V must have died in the past and someone had shut the window into the trim. I was willing to accept the car regardless, but the dealer also kindly detailed that out for me, not entirely because it's plastic and they didn't want to paint it, but it's nearly unnoticeable now which is more than good enough. The dealer also replaced the seal on that door without my asking because they noticed it wasn't in the best shape. Otherwise, no parking dents, no paint missing, including on the lip of the bonnet which I checked, and if there was anything in the past it has been repaired well. My dealer is Yeomans, the same one firewire mentioned. I'm very happy with the service they have provided to date, although with this car it's still early days for me!

Oh, since this thread is about prices and I'm at risk of derailing it, I paid around £17,000 - which (provided you can accept that the car won't take you very far or carry a lot ) I think is a great price for this car with or without options, as long as it's been well looked after and the mileage isn't too high. Unlike firewire I'm not too concerned about the trade in price for this car, I plan to keep it for as long as it'll run properly and I don't doubt that it will run a very long time (5-10 years and likely more, subject potentially to problems with obtaining replacement parts at some point but will cross that bridge when I get to it). So I'm looking at the price with a different perspective. Funnily enough, I think the main issue would be if CarPlay stops supporting the car's OS, that might be the only factor that annoys me enough to get rid of it it.

And if the EV market does crater, well, if there is any EV on the market that has a floor price just because of it's wholesome appearance, it has to be this one... or so I hope! I mean, really, short of a supercar (which would probably get keyed in short order), I haven't seen another car that makes me and other people smile like this one does, including younger people. I live next to a busy park, parents are taking their children there for a stroll all the time, and kids seems to be hypnotised by the appearance of this thing. It's really got a friendly robot vibe about it. I've even seen much younger kids in pushchairs turning their heads, even after the point that the pushchair is well past the car .

I have a level of OCD about cars and the bits you mention there would be enough to put me off, particularly if the dealer had overlooked or omitted certain cosmetic items.

Each to their own but I would rather pay a small premium to be the first owner of a car made 30 months ago in top nick than have the hassle of trying to fix various blemishes as I would be inclined to do. Id also know it’s not been fast charged each time and so on.

I'd side with you here.
Especially as the lack of 'servicing' would have no impact at all to the battery, motor etc because the so called servicing is a blatant rip off, with a quick look around, a pollen filter & brake fluid change every 2 years, then a gear reduction oil change every 5 years.

If this is your main concern, then that is already solved by the abundance of adaptors on the market that are available now, I have one to make my Android Auto wireless and I could have spent a few pounds more for one that also combined Apple CarPlay.

I totally understand the OCD about a car, especially a car like this where it's the design above all that holds the greatest appeal. I'm just not at that level, perhaps one day!

I don't think the dealer overlooked the blemishes in my case, the rims on two of the wheels were readily apparent on first inspection, and it wasn't that bad, just some nicks in one or two small areas but because the rims are blue it's readily noticeable. They mentioned it would be repaired without me having to ask. The dents along the rear passenger door trim was more subtle, you have to be looking at from just the right angle, so I do think they just missed it. And again, it's fine because they repaired it to a sufficient extent. They just got the car driven in the very day that I reserved it, they'd barely put the photos up before I reserved, so it's fine for me.

If I have to repair it, that's one thing, but if the dealer sees what I'm looking at and is happy and willing to do some small fixes to secure the sale that's more than enough for me personally, specifically in the case where the scuffs/scrapes/blemishes aren't too bad and aren't caused by anything major. I think in the three cases that you described, that is a bit much for me and I'm with you. Also, If I feel something is being missold or hidden, that's entirely different. The paint on the body on this example was pristine and otherwise the plastic all around was pristine, and it's low mileage so the inside is not far from new, that's my current threshold for my level of OCD for a used car I suppose!

Unless buying brand new, I don't think I can get much better than that. I'm also not really concerned about it having been DC charged a lot which is unlikely owing to the low mileage. I was initially going to buy new, but I think I'd just prefer to have a battery that has been cycled a bit regularly given as you pointed out that it's not likely to be a recent manufacture.

The problem is just ensuring you have the 8 year warranty, some manufacturers do require it for the battery warranty to stay valid. Why, who knows, but it is what it is. It's a rip off but I'd rather have that security, even though I don't know for sure exactly what Honda does in this regard. So if buying used, for this car the service history isn't that important to ensure the car is in great order, but more to ensure that if it bricks one day, as unlikely as that is, that my problem will be solved by the manufacturer without protest.

That's great to know. Thanks.

Well, finally I got the car 2023 Reg. from the same dealer (Lexus) for £18,500 with 2805 miles on it. Turns out the car includes service until 2028 so that was a nice surprise. The condition is immaculate with absolutely no cosmetic defects inside or outside which I'm really happy about. I fitted the car with blackvue dash cam with independent battery pack which takes power from the car while its running but am hoping that once the car is off there is no power going from the 12 volt battery via the cigarette lighter socket? Right?!

Aside from that what a difference between Lexus dealer and the absolutely terrible Honda dealer in Chiswick London.

Seems like a good deal! Congrats, yes the 12V socket is not powered when the car is turned off.
