There’s been a lot of talk in Swedish press lately about how a lot of cars – even relatively new ones – are going to loose connectivity when the 2G and 3G networks get shut down soon.

Does anyone know if the modem in the e is 3G or 4G?

If it’s 3G I’m going to be pissed!

As far as I know Vodafone Internet in the Car uses 4G, so I'm guessing the car has a 4G modem.

On the following page, it says under "What connection type/speed do I get?" that "you will have internet access through Vodafone 4G technology. You will have up to 4G speed; however, your connection speed will vary depending on the network coverage in your location.":

It would make sense that it’s not 3G. They didn’t cheap out on other parts of the car so why cheap out on the modems.

I’ve read about VW models sold as late as 2021 that are not only going to loose all internet based functions such as pre-heating and find-my-car. But also – more importantly – the in-built eCall/SOS system.

There's good news for us users of 2G devices and services! 2G networks are planned to remain operational up until 2033, so we'll have several more years to use them.

This is particularly relevant for the eCall SOS button, which relies on a 2G network technology called GPRS (or 2.5G). Additionally, the Display Audio unit and its connected devices, according to the system updates terms and conditions in the manual, use Wi-Fi or WAP, which also depend on the underlying 2G cellular network.

It's important to remember that these 2G-based functionalities are separate from the 4G Vodafone Internet service, which requires a separate subscription.
