As the subject heading states, I have just 'paid' the £0 annual road tax for the coming year using the DVLA website.
Why 'O why can't we set up a £0 payment instruction for this, just as anyone can if the tax is a non zero amount?

I did mine today as well.
I guess the act of taxing it is more a legal/data issue, another touch point, another chance to gather any changes. In the olden days you didn't have to declare sorn, but now it requires an active participation to declare you will not drive it on the road which i guess makes prosecutions easier.
Luckily it doesn't take very long, so i'll happily key in a 16 digit number in exchange for free road tax.

@Wee Peem
What is the point that you’re making?
Considering that there are some petrol cars over 10 years old that are still £0 VED I would expect it to be quite a while before any currently registered BEV has its VED increased.
When the government does increase BEV taxation then I’m confident that it’ll be a lot less than the average cost of any petrol or diesel car.

"I’m confident that it’ll be a lot less than the average cost of any petrol or diesel car." I don't see why this should be the case. Once the amount of revenue that will be lost by an ever increasing EV "take-up" becomes sizable this "skint" government of any political persuasion will look around for more reasons to milk the Cash Cow of we motorists and lo and behold there's a bunch of them paying zero road tax. That will never do.
