I guess the winter sun was just at the right angle today, when I spotted these 2 “holes” in the dash. No doubt someone (Keith) who has read all of the 400+pages of the Owners Manual may know what they do. Never noticed them before.
Maybe it's to check there is a real driver sat their before you set off.

Maybe part of a auto-brightness for the dash lights? Like you have on mobile phones where the screen gets lighter or darker depending on the ambient light.

Yes, it does occasionally come out during the day (but as you work nights, you probably missed this bright hour).
